Ed was competing in the 98lb weight class, and decided he was tired of being tiny and started lifting weights. Interview with Powerlifting Legend Ed Coan. That’s incredible because we owe these guys everything. He’s incredibly accessible for someone who is such a big name in the sport, and that only further solidifies his status as the Greatest of All Time. He has been described as "the greatest powerlifter in the history of the sport". EC: Well, thank you too. SO: Well, I can’t say enough nice things Eddy, you have been extremely helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to talk with me.

SO: I realize this is an “old news” question but, how has the weight jump up been? Many consider Ed's 901 deadlift at 220 to be one of the most impressive feats of strength ever completed. The Ed Coan Deadlift Routine was created by Ed Coan himself for Mark Philippi. EC: Yes it is, it is easy to lift light weight with bad form. If you were to ask anybody in the strength game “who is the greatest powerlifter of all time?”, unanimously you’ll hear one name: Ed Coan. The amount of sets decrease to 2. US ONLY. You have a top quality product for a great price! No briefs, none of that stuff …and I don’t wear a deadlift suit. At the end you should have completed each exercise with 3 sets of 8 reps. 5 exercises will be performed as seen in the table below. So it kind of makes up for not having a really long abdominal region. I am against the monolift really because the guys before us Powerlifting was set, squat, bench, deadlift. He was temporarily suspended in 1985 for the use of Deca-Durabolin, an anabolic steroid. Ed was the lightest man to ever break the 2400 pound total barrier.
SO: Speaking of your build…how would you classify yourself? I think the bodyweight has given me added incentive where it feels better, more natural. I have a student of mine that weighs 140 and currently his deadlift max is 435.
Each week he adds 15 pounds to the previous week's work set weight. EC: Bink does a lot of volume and it works well for him and he probably trains harder than anyone I know. EC: Short legs, longer upper body, longer arms. The started doing this before we did and made all the mistakes well before we did so we wouldn’t have to.
Then it is over with and you just hit it. Before starting the routine you will need to know your current 1RM (1 rep max), and your desired 1RM. If you want to do that, go ahead. In 1991 competing in the 220 class, Ed deadlifted 901 lbs which was another world record that stood for a very long time. Your average powerlifter ain’t going to be doing too much cardio but for me a great way to ease the lower back and hamstring DOMS was to do at least 30 minutes of walking the day after a deadlift session. A few sets of light flyes and he is ready for triceps. Having set 71 world records during his career, Coan is widely regarded as the greatest powerlifter of all time. EC: ya know, I use to hang out with Fred in California a lot. EC: Don’t do them that often because I very rarely even wear a belt. While continuing to train and chase his dreams of being the next Franco, Ed happened to catch a glimpse of a powerlifting competition on tv on the “World Wide of Sports.” This would be the first time Ed laid eyes on Mr. He would squat twice per week, maxing out every session until he reached a 500-pound squat. Also, the new found grip strength has massively helped my all round lifting and grabbing game. How does that make it right? But, in the main, this is a fantastically constructed deadlift programme structured around the requisite parts of the movement. There is an old lifter named Chip McCain from Texas, Chip had such a hard time setting up in the squat I mean it was like 5 minutes it felt like. Pretty cool! Points to ponder: Coan is a big believer in heavy, specific shoulder training. EC: The right person……it is only if the person can identify the problems with that system. Mark is, and you can quote this, he is a “ball buster and a tough son of a bitch.” I’ve watched Bink when he’s come back to Chicago to train and he definately inspired me to get back in shape. Ed Coan never had beginners in mind when creating this routine. If you want to get stronger at a particular exercise, then you need to be practising it regularly in a variety of different sets, reps and speeds. EC: Yea…that is the man. Because I use them every week lol. Assistance work weights are never mentioned, but around 60% is a common recommendation. He set an all-time powerlifting record total at 2,463 pounds, even though at the time he was not in the heaviest weight class. Again, do not circuit. I missed the first two, until I got it right on the last one. I used to like going too heavy, and hittin’ it hard, and it used to be gone by the time I got to the meet.
He finished the meet with a 485 squat, a 295 bench, and a 495 deadlift. It will also ease the strain on the joints which will almost certainly be aching. It’s not like I have a long torso and the lower part is long, like the ab region.
Ed thought, “wait a minute… I can be that big, that strong, and not have to diet and parade around on stage in those skimpy little shorts?” He knew that he had found his sport. Ed Coan’s reasoning for this was to get the back pre-fatigued, and put you in a similar situation as when you compete at a meet. Are you thinking of giving this routine a go? Ed cycles on all his exercises. Your accessory exercises are composite parts of the deadlift. I think it is a lowering of standards, and I catch some heat sometimes because I don’t agree with it but, that is my own personal opinion and I don’t agree with it. In the off season if you squat and dead without a belt your abs are going to get pretty strong…they’ll get enough stimulation. EC: Yeah, pretty much I was stronger because I was at a lower bodyweight the only thing was that I had less injuries.
The famous 901 deadlift was done at a time when meets had two-hour weigh-ins and no special deadlift bar. Off season is the best…you get rid of all your equipment and you will find out where your weak points are at in a hurry. We don’t have the time and you probably don’t have the attention span to read all of that (there's a lot.) Perform each exercise for 2 sets of 5 reps. During week 10 you will not perform any assistance exercises. People cannot be afraid of change, to try new things and his assistance work is extremely innovative and a lot of it is just plain cool. $5 FLAT RATE.

At 5’6″ and 220lbs Coan’s best single ply lifts are as follows: These incredible feats of strength gave Coan six IPF world powerlifting gold medals between 1984 and 1995. SO: Do you put more less emphasis on the bench under the assumption that you can get more total with Squats and Deads? Treat week 6 the same way, but increase the weight to 65% for the Power Shrugs.
