On the positive side, the speaker is loud and offers a decent level of bass, and audio output through the phone’s 3.5mm headphone jack is also decent. Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 chipset and blessed with 4GB of RAM, the Mi A1 is no slouch in terms of processing power. That said, the Mi 6 is currently on a beta MIUI build whereas the Mi A1 is running a stable version of Android 7.1.2 Nougat. You're not going to notice any slowdowns or lags in everyday usage. As a result, the Mi A1 makes recent devices like the Redmi Note 4 look outdated. Xiaomi has gone big on dual-camera setups in some of its other leading phones, so it perhaps shouldn’t be a shock to find this configuration in the Mi A1. One of the nicest things about the design is the way the chassis tapers and curves ever so gently from the sides towards the back. Then there's the Mi Max 2, which for ₹16,999 offers a large 6.44-inch display backed by a gorgeous aluminum unibody design. The back of the device is where things get interesting, with the Mi A1 sporting a dual camera setup. Call quality didn’t blow us away, but was more than adequate on both sides of the conversation. While Google’s Android One initiative hasn’t had the best of starts, the Mi A1 is a massive stride in the right direction. This program failed – ironically – because of Xiaomi's triumphant entry into the Indian market, which made a mockery of the under-powered devices which spearheaded the Android One initiative. You get toggles for filters and easy access to various shooting modes, which include panorama, tilt shift, a square mode for Instagram, and others. The only Xiaomi apps installed are Mi Remote – which allows you to use the phone’s IR blaster to control appliances around your home – and a Feedback app that provides a direct line to Xiaomi with bugs and suggestions. The Mi A1 is a great phone in its own right, but Xiaomi's decision to partner with Google to deliver stock Android makes it a much more compelling option. The 5MP front shooter is similarly decent for taking selfies. These little things count. Xiaomi ticks all the right boxes with this affordable but feature-rich smartphone.
On the back, it looks a lot like the OnePlus 5.
